What this tool does
Type or paste text to see its word count, character count with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time. The numbers update as you type, which helps when you are writing to a limit for a cover letter, an application form, a product listing or a social media post.
How it counts
- Words are runs of letters or numbers. Contractions (don't), hyphenated words (well-known) and numbers such as 1,250.50 each count as one word.
- Characters include spaces and line breaks. An emoji or an accented letter counts as one character.
- Sentences end with a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis, or at a blank line.
- Paragraphs are non-empty lines, as in most word processors.
- Reading time uses an average adult reading speed of 238 words per minute.
Limitations
Abbreviations such as “e.g.” or “Dr.” can be counted as the end of a sentence. Character limits on some websites count line breaks or emoji differently, so leave a small margin when you are close to a limit. Reading and speaking times are averages; technical or unfamiliar text takes longer.
Is my text saved or uploaded?
No. Counting happens in your browser and the text is not sent to Taskmoro. If you refresh the page, the text is gone.
Does the character count include spaces?
Both are shown. “Characters” includes spaces and line breaks; “Characters (no spaces)” leaves out all whitespace.
Why does my word count differ from another tool?
Tools treat hyphenated words, numbers, dashes and URLs differently. This counter keeps hyphenated words and numbers together, which is how most word processors count.
How long is a 1,000-word article to read?
About 4 minutes at the average reading speed of 238 words per minute, and about 7 minutes to read aloud at a presentation pace.
